      I'm a firm believer in second chances. 1 know over the years that I have had a few myself. We all make mistakes in life, the question is, do we learn from them? Now, before you go off on me, I not talking about giving murderers and rapists and child molesters a second chance. What I mean is there are consequences for everything we do, some are good, but most are bad.

Grenade explosion injures 16 at Mexican bar
      PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) Mexican authorities say at least 16 people have been injured by a grenade that exploded at a bar in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta. Jalisco state prosecutors say five of the injured have been detained as part of the investigation. Four of those detained each lost a leg in the explosion before dawn Thursday.

Law Enforcement working overtime through Labor Day
      AUSTIN, TX - From now through Sept. 6, the Texas Department of Transportation, police departments, and sheriff ’s offices across the Lone Star state are working together to reduce impaired driving during the annual Drink, Drive, Go to Jail campaign. Law enforcement statewide will be working overtime to find and arrest impaired drivers throughout the Labor Day holiday weekend.

2 drop out of Navigation Dist. Race
      Two candidates have opted out of the Nov. 2 Willacy County Navigation District board race, according to county elections administrator Jaime Serna. In Pct. 2 Ray Solis dropped out of the race and Steve "Bonzai" Banyai has decided not to run for the Fifth position on the board, which is an at- large seat.

      When local governing bodies vote to raise taxes above a percentage rate set by the state they automatically trigger a procedure that allows a Rollback election where voters can approve, or disapprove the higher rates.

Man jailed for marijuana found under load of squash
      EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) An illegal alien from Mexico has been ordered to spend five years in federal prison for possessing more than a quarter ton of marijuana found hidden under squash during a southwestern Illinois traffic stop. Thirty-seven-year-old Fran- cisco Javier-Rivera was sentenced Monday in East St. Louis.

Drivers using seatbelts to get $1 reward
      TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - For two weeks, Kansas drivers who are sure to buckle up could be paid for their efforts. Between Aug. 29 and Sept. 11, volunteers in 46 Kansas cities will hand out $1 bills to drivers who have everyone in the vehicles secured. The Bucks for Buckles campaign is sponsored by Safe Kids Kansas, State Farm and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Man killed, another wounded at pot farm
      EUREKA, Calif. (AP) A 28-year-old Humboldt County man is in custody on suspicion of shooting another man to death and wounding a second during an argument at a remote marijuana farm. Authorities say 28-yearold Mykal Wilde was arrested on Thursday, a day after the shootings, when the California Highway Patrol pulled his pickup truck over near Kneeland Airport.

Oklahoma narcotics agents arrest more than 50 people
      WEATHERFORD, Okla. (AP) - Agents from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics have arrested dozens of people allegedly involved in bringing in drugs from Mexico. OBN spokesman Mark Woodward says 40 arrest warrants were served in Weatherford and 13 in Lawton. Those arrested face a variety of drug charges.

3 from Georgia face counterfeiting counts in Texas
      ORANGE, Texas (AP) - A traffic stop on Interstate 10 in southeast Texas has led to counterfeiting charges against three people from Georgia. An Orange County Sheriffs Office statement said the driver, 60-year-old Arthur Muhammad of Lithonia, Ga., plus 29-year-old Amirah Price of Stone Mountain, Ga., and 41- year-old David Haynes of Decatur, Ga., remained in custody Thursday.

Water woes at state parks in Valley
      HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) - Water woes partly blamed on this summer's Hurricane Alex have left two state parks in south Texas with different problems. Experts say that Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco has too much water. The problem at Resaca de la Palma State Park in Brownsville, about 30 miles away, is a lack of water.

Texas schools can check bus driver records online
      AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Administrators at school districts across Texas now have a faster and simpler way to check the safety records of bus drivers. The Department of Public Safety on Thursday announced a website, Texas.gov, that allows districts to instantly review bus driver records, instead of having to rely on the mail to get the information.
