Study: Food-borne illnesses cost U.S. $152 billion
      YAKIMA, Washington (AP) - Food-borne illnesses, such as E. coli and salmonella, cost the United States $152 billion annually in health care and other losses, according to a report released Wednesday by a food safety group.

Austin police note upturn in random gang violence
      AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - After recent drive-by shootings and the death of a 75-year-old woman who was beaten during a pursesnatching, Austin police say they're increasingly concerned about random gang violence in the city. Unlike many gang-related crimes, in which members attack rival groups, recent victims were chosen for no apparent reason, police said.

Baby wounded, mother killed in Mexican border city
      CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) - Authorities in the northern Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez say assailants shot a woman to death and seriously wounded her 9-month-old daughter. Prosecutors’ spokesman Arturo Sandoval says the mother and child were traveling with the child's father when the gunmen chased and attacked their vehicle.

Prison for killing San Antonio restaurant founder
      VICTORIA, Texas (AP) - Life in prison is the punishment for a San Antonio man convicted of killing an elderly neighbor by shooting her in the head with an arrow. A jury in Victoria on Wednesday rejected the death penalty for 20- year-old Joe Estrada Jr. and decided he must serve life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Goat leads Odessa police, animal control on chase
      ODESSA, Texas (AP) - All over town ran a lone goat as Odessa police and animal control officers tried to catch the roaming animal. The report to police came in Saturday as a sheep on the loose. Officers then determined it was a goat loping through a Taco Bell parking lot, a park and the dorm area at the University of Texas- Permian Basin.

UT regents raise tuition
      AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The University of Texas System regents have voted to increase tuition at their flagship Austin campus by 5.4 percent next fall. The regents’ unanimous vote Wednesday also increases tuition by another 3.89 percent in the fall of 2011. The regents also voted increases for the next two years at the system’s eight other campuses.

      MEXICO CITY (AP) - A mayor in central Mexico says he has fired one of his town officials for spray-painting the buttocks of a teenage boy as punishment for graffiti tagging.

Gutierrez convicted of marijuana possession in Kingsville
      Kenedy and Kieburg District Attorney John Hubert has reported that Raymondville resident Jose Isidro Gutierrez, 36, has been convicted of the possession of 88 pounds of marijuana. He plead guilty to the felony charge and was sentenced to serve seven years in prison.

DPS: spring breakers avoid Mexican border cities
      AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Department of Public Safety is advising Texans on spring break to avoid Mexican border cities because of drug cartel violence. DPS Director Steven McCraw on Thursday, in a statement, cited an increase in Mexican drug cartel-related violence in northern border cities.

County Commissioners deal with routine issues at Monday meeting
     At Monday's county meeting commissioners dealt with long list of items -- mostly routine, some involving personnel. Mary Caballero has resigned from her job as a librarian at Reber Memorial Libray to return to West Texas. She will be replaced by someone from the library's pool of previous applicants.
