Mexican drug kingpin sentenced in Houston
      HOUSTON (AP) - A drug kingpin who once headed one of Mexico's most notoriously violent cartels was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday and ordered to forfeit $50 million, prosecutors announced after a closed hearing in Houston.

U.S. closes Reynosa consulate after Mexico border gunfights
      Mexico (AP) - The United States has temporarily closed its consular office in the Mexican border city of Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas, after gunbattles with drug gangs rocked the area this week. Four suspected cartel gunmen were killed Thursday outside the nearby city of Matamoros after they attacked an army patrol on a highway, Mexico’s Defense Department reported.

Santa Monica man goes on trial for second time in intoxication manslaughter case
      An elderly Santa Monica man, Mauro Concepcion Alvarez, went on trial in 197th State District Court Tuesday charged with the intoxication manslaughter death of Pedro Palomo, 68, a farmworker. Palomo died on March 16, 2007 when the pickup the two men were in overturned near the floodway in Santa Monica. The man was pinned beneath the truck.

Police nab California man for child molestation
      Following up a lead from Crime Stoppers Raymondville Police arrested a man wanted in California for multiple counts of sex crimes with a victim under the age of 10. Police investigator David Robles said that Juan Conde, 44, was located at his parents’ home, 421 West Tampico St., while he sat in a swing smoking a cigarette.

Su Clinica to remodel local facility and build new pharmacy
      Su Clinica now serves 4,047 patients at its Raymondville clinic which includes a pharmacy and occupies a total of 17,500 square feet of space. In the coming year Su Clinica intends to remodel the clinic and build a free standing 5,000 square ft. pharmacy. This will bring the total size of the facility to 22,500 square feet.

The Longhorns begin spring practice on Friday and Garrett Gilbert will formally step in to replace Colt McCoy. 400 jobs coming to North Texas
      WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) - A Canadian company is establishing its U.S. headquarters in Wichita Falls, creating about 400 jobs. The Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Friday that it has finalized an agreement with Ontario-based Natura World, which makes sustainable, earth-friendly mattresses.

      HOUSTON (AP) - Dozens of Houston schools no longer leave a first impression that pupils are housed in a prison-like environment. On Thursday, contractors wrapped up a three-month project to rid 68 schools of nearly 100,000 feet of barbed wire atop chain-link fences surrounding the campuses.

      FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - An internal investigation has determined that a Fort Worth police officer was drinking on duty before crashing a city vehicle and killing a mother of two. The Fort Worth Star- Telegram cited documents filed with the Civil Service Commission over the December incident.

      GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - The maker of a Texas A&M university racing boat that capsized in 2008 has reached a settlement with crew member Roger Stone’s widow. Cape Fear Yacht Works has agreed to pay Linda Stone and her two children $375,000 in the next three years, according to a Saturday story in the Galveston County Daily News.

Feds may spend $7.5 million on new fish ladder
      LOS ANGELES (AP) - Less than a decade after spending $1 million on a fish ladder that was supposed to help steelhead trout negotiate Santa Paula Creek, the federal government may spend another $7.5 million to design and build a new one. There are now less than 500 steelhead left from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County to the Mexico border.
