"Lameduck" Guerra takes death penalty off table for confessed Lyford baby-killer

Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel "Johnny: Guerra wrote a letter last week to Mexican authorities removing capital punishment as an option for an 18-year-old woman, who confessed to smothering her newborn baby to death on June 4, 2007 in her mother's home in Lyford, according to courthouse sources.

Construction crews started work on Raymondville's city hall remodelling project last week, according to Maintenance Manager Ventura Nieto. The first order of business was to secure the work area with a safety walkway. The building's windows were shingled-in during the 1980s.

Garza's immunity from lawsuits upheld for courtroom spanking alternative

District Judge Abel Limas ruled in favor of Los Fresnos justice of the peace Gustavo "Gus" Garza by granting him immunity from lawsuits at a hearing last week. Garza, a former Willacy County district attorney was sued by the parents who alleged the judge overstepped his authority by offering an alternative punishment of parental spanking in his courtroom.

Interim school superintendent chosen for San Perlita ISD

San Perlita ISD's business manager was selected as the district's interim superintendent. Albert A. Pena IV was named by the board of trustees to replace former superintendent Carlos Guerra, who left for unspecified reasons. Pena has been the district's business manager since 2007, and was special programs administrator from 2005 to 2007.

This year's grain sorghum harvest better than expected - Willacy County yields up

Willacy County farmers did not think this year's grain sorghum crop would yield what it has, and have been pleasantly surprised. Meanwhile, prices have skyrocketed from last year resulting in a volatile market. Local farmer Tommy Rains Jr. said Willacy County is fortunate compared to what he sees in other counties.

Small plane crashes on take off in New Mexico; 5 killed

(AP) Federal investigators are trying to determine what caused the crash of a single-engine airplane shortly after taking off from Santa Rosa's airport, killing all five people aboard. The Cessna 206 took off Sunday from the Route 66 Airport around 1 p.m. and crashed almost immediately, said Roland Herwig, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Most farmers use tractors and pickup trucks to move their bales, but Scott Davis has invented a new buggy that even a 6-year-old can operate. It's called a Stick Wagon, and it can pick up and move a round bale with a four-wheeler or ATV. Davis said the key to his design is balance.

Mexicans protest border fence with trees

Beside his parents and wife he is also survived by two daughter; Veronica Muniz and Cassandra Munguia both of Lyford.
