      NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (AP) - Any old town can have its own Oktoberfest. The beer stein-hoisting events pop up all over in late September and early October. But New Braunfels, a Central Texas town with strong ties to its German heritage, waits till a little later in the fall to honor a specific piece of Deutschland tradition: sausage.

Wet summer spurs boom in Texas' wild hog population
      LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas ranchers and farmers fighting the largest population of feral hogs in the United States could soon be trying to ward off twice as many of the tusked, fieldshredding animals. Wildlife officials fear the ample water and vegetation brought by record-setting rains in Texas this year could double the state estimate of 2 million hogs.

Giant meteorite found in Kansas to be sold at auction
      KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 1,410-pound meteorite, wrenched two years ago from a wheat field near Greensburg, Kan., is going up for auction next month, with an estimated price that's out of this world. The so-called Brenham meteorite, prized as the largest of its kind, is one of two centerpiece attractions at a meteorite sale scheduled for Oct.

U.S. security chief defends plan for border fences

State border council seeks public input
      AUSTIN -- Texas' new Border Security Council will conduct public forums in border communities Oct. 1-3. 'Kats struggle in lopsided loss to Rio Hondo Bobcats
      Last Friday night before a near capacity crowd at Bobcat stadium in Rio Hondo, the Bobcats dejust feated the Bearkats 33-7. In the first quarter, the Bobcats won the toss and received the first half kick-off. On the third play from scrimmage, #14 running back Jacob Martinez fumbled the ball and #11 Mesa recovered the pigskin on the Bobcat 30 yard line.

      The Trojan Cross Country team continued to improve as they competed well at the Santa Rosa Warrior Meet last Saturday. Rene Flores finished first in the JV Division with a PR of 19:06 for the three-mile course. Freshman Luis Herrera finished 3rd, while Christian Hernandez had a PR of 19:41 and finished 6th.

Smoky the cat found more than 3 months after tornado in rural northern Wis.
      GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - More than three months after disappearing during a tornado, Smoky the cat has been reunited with his owner. Smoky was last seen June 7, before a tornado destroyed Wanda Ploeger's mobile home in rural Riverview, scattering her belongings.
