'Kats struggle in lopsided loss to Rio Hondo Bobcats
Last Friday night before a near capacity crowd at Bobcat stadium in Rio Hondo, the Bobcats dejust feated the Bearkats 33-7. In the first quarter, the Bobcats won the toss and received the first half kick-off. On the third play from scrimmage, #14 running back Jacob Martinez fumbled the ball and #11 Mesa recovered the pigskin on the Bobcat 30 yard line. The Beakats were very opportunistic, they had a first and 10 deep in Bobcat territory. Before a stunned crowd the 'Kats first play from scrimmage QB #6 Salinas looked to his left and connected on a beautiful 28 yard pass play to #12 Dustin (The Twister) Alejo. Alejo made a splendid and one of his patended catches to put the Bearkats in business. Two plays later, Salinas hit #31 Leroy (The Fridge) Salazar for a 7 yard T.D. at the 10:08 mark. The 'Kats took a quick 7-0 shortlived lead. Bearkat fans went wild.
The 'Kats looked like they were in for a knock down drag out game game against the Rio Hondo squad.
The Bobcats were able to tie the game on the ensuing drive. Rio Hondo sustained a 12 play 80 yard drive and #14 Martinez scored to tie the game 7-7.
The Bearkats marched down field on their next pass. But they had to settle for a 45 yard field goal attempt by #4 Hugo Sanchez. Hugo's kick was 2 or 3 yards short. The Bobcats controlled the rest of the game. In the first half, the Bobcats had 15 first downs to 3 for the Raymondville Bearkats.
The second half was marred by torrential rain that changed the dynamics of the game. The Kats moreover, had 5 turnovers which contributed to the lopsided score.
One bright spot defense for the 'Kats was #8 Ochoa. C.B. Ochoa had another pick in the game. Ochoa now has four interceptions in this short season. Ochoa's cousin, Hector Cantu had 16 ints. in 1989.
Cantu was named 2nd taem allstate for his effort. Let's see how close Ochoa can get to Hector's Bearkat record.
Next week the 3-2 'Kats will host the 3 and 1 Hidalgo Pirates. In two weeks the 'Kats begin district play at Lyford.
Back the 'Kats! See you at the game.
