Lyford Iraq War soldier comes home for a short military leave

      U.S. Army Sgt. Erik Martinez got to spend two weeks with his parents, his wife, and daughter in his home town of Lyford in a welcome break from the Iraq War. The 27-year-old soldier is a 1998 Lyford High School graduate who is on his second tour of Iraq, which will end in January.

Nav District: new officers, new plans, new budget

      The Willacy County Navigation District Board of Navigation and Canal Commissioners met last Wednesday. This first meeting of the fiscal year included a review of the new budget, and discussion of plans for projects using the newly acquired dredger.

      The Raymondville ISD Board of Trustees met Tuesday evening. The board heard an outline for selling $9.82 million in bonds for construction of a new school. The remainder of the meeting centered largely on maintaining employment and increasing staff pay in the face of declining student population.
