Go out and vote, reader says Dear Editor: I attended the debate of the candidates for district/county attorney. Art Saenz was out of town, and Juan Guerra chose not to attend which was probably a wise decision. An incumbent must defend the status quo, and that would put Guerra in a very difficult position. How would he explain what he has done this past year and what he has not done for the past several years? Bernard Ammerman, who attended, said that he wants Guerra out of office. Many of us do. It was said that had the election been held when Guerra was constantly in the news that he could not win. However, have some of those people forgotten Guerra's antics at the jail, and the cost of his many lawsuits filed against county officials. (Heavy court expenses may explain why the county enforcement officers in the sheriff's department receive less money than the city police.) This not a time to forget. We need to remember why we thought then that we needed a different district attorney and remember to get out and vote. If a candidate has offered you money or special services for your vote, he is acting against the law and should not represent the law as district/county attorney. If he tells you that he knows how you vote, he is not telling the truth. He can check to see IF you voted, but no one knows how you vote except you and those you choose to tell. An honest representative of the law will not bribe or threaten you. It would certainly be in the best interest of the county if we had a two party race instead of a three-way race in the Democratic Party. However, wishing doesn't change circumstances. Only action can do that. If you don't vote, you will be casting a vote to whoever wins. If you care about law and order in Willacy County, GET OUT AND VOTE. Have a real say in who tries cases in Willacy County. We need to reestablish a law abiding and peaceful community. If you are a Republican voting in the Republican primary, pray for us. Sincerely, Norma Christian |
