'Kats take baseball opener from MMA
The Raymondville Bearkats baseball team opened up their season with a victory over MMA on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Orlando Mesa had a great night on the mound as he allowed only two runs. The 'Kats defense was greatly helped by their offense as they went on to secure the victory with a score of 9 to 2.
On Thursday, Feb. 22, the 'Kats traveled to P.I. where they participated in the P.I. Tournament. The 'Kats faced P.I. in the first round and were unable to overcome a shaky start. In their second game, the 'Kats face PSJA Memorial and battle the big school for two hours. Although PSJA won the game, the 'Kats showed they can be a team to be reckoned with. On Saturday, the 'Kats face Lyford in a guaranteed third game. The 'Kats dominated the dogs from the start. Mark Birkleback had an outstanding day on the mound pitching four innings and Orlando Mesa sealed the deal in the fifth. The 'Kats beat the Dogs 11 to 5.
The 'Kats will next participate in the Hebronville Baseball Tournament. They are scheduled to face Zapata and Bishop on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. and then at 7 p.m.
