Neb. corn harvest called 2nd highest on record

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska corn crop is expected to be the second-highest on record at 1.38 billion bushels.

The latest federal estimate, based on Nov. 1 conditions, says Nebraska's corn crop will come in 7 percent under last year's record harvest of 1.47 billion bushels.

The yield estimate is 161 bushels per acre, the secondhighest on record and 5 bushels below the record set in 2004.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the Nebraska area harvested for corn was 8.55 million acres -down 7 percent from last year.

The USDA says Nebraska's soybean crop will come in at an estimated 223 million bushels, which is 14 percent higher than last year. The yield was forecast at 46 bushels an acre, 5 bushels below the record set in 2007.
