Thieves, vandals target churches

In the past few weeks breakins at several Raymondville churches have resulted in vandalism, theft of property and graffiti.

On December 15 vandals spray painted a wooden statue of St. Anthony at the St. Anthony Catholic Church on S. 1st St. Graffiti was also painted on outside church walls. One individual was arrested at the scene as he attempted to enter the church.

On Dec. 29 Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church was hit, a blue and red welding machine was stolen from a shed outside the church, commemorative coins, currency, two laptops and a computer flash drive were stolen from inside the church.

On Jan. 4 wood double doors at the First United Methodist Church were damaged and on the same day a wooden door at Four Square Church was damaged.

On Jan. 5 Mungia Dentistry and KSOX office were damaged. Police Dept. David Robles believes the crimes are the work of teenage gang members.

"it's a group of kids that are doing it," he said.

Rewards are being offered by Willacy County Crime Stoppers for the identification leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for these brazen acts.
