Lyford's Eric Molina TKO's Gonzales, keeps cruiseweight title

By Tom Cantu

Friday night: Casa De Amistad, Harlingen. Before yet another sell-out crowd at Harlingen's Casa De Amistad, Lyford's Eric Molina defeated the challenger for the Texas State Cruiseweight Title, Osvaldo "Pyscho Monster" Martinez of San Antonio.

Someone once said, "If you want to be happy, lower your expectations. If you want to be great, raise them. That is exactly what Molina has been doing recently. Molina has been training to become the best that he can be. Although his demeaner does not show it, Eric has fire in his belly. This Friday night, Eric was the manliest man in the ring.

In the first round, Molina connected with a straight punch that knocked Martinez down. Osvaldo got to his feet. The third man in the ring gave him a standing eight count. The bell saved the challenger. The same thing happened in the second round. One punch sent Martinez to the canvas. Martinez buckled badly after a Molina right hander. Once again the bell saved Osvaldo. However, the challenger of San Antonio was not able to survive the third round. Molina staggered Osvaldo once again. Molina hit him so hard that Martinez stutter stepped on his right leg for about three steps. Martinez fell on to the ropes dazed. The champ, Molina moved in for the kill. The ref called the fight over.

I asked Molina how he felt after the fight. Molina answered, "I did not want to let my supporters down tonight. I was very confident coming into the fight. He was not going to take the title away from me. He got his chance. Pyscho blew it."

Molina will defend his title one more time on June 19 at Hidalgo's Dodge Arena.

Eric added, "If possible please come and support me one more time." For information about Molina's next fight visit www.fistsoffuryboxing.com.
