HOUSTON (AP) - Two people are facing intoxicationrelated charges in connection with separate crashes that left a police officer in critical, but stable condition.

Fifty-one-year-old Houston police officer Lloyd Morrison II was investigating a one car accident early Saturday morning on Interstate 45 when a Honda driven by Moroof Kareem struck Morrison's patrol car.

Then a Ford Escort driven by Richard Sandoval struck Morrison's vehicle, pinning the officer against a firetruck which had responded to the original accident.

Houston police department spokesman Kese Smith said Kareem was charged with one count of DWI and Sandoval was charged with one count of intoxication assault.

It was not immediately known whether they have attorneys.

Morrison was scheduled to have a second surgery on Sunday after both his legs were broken and his shoulder crushed.
