Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
Recently, you published an article regarding legislation which will substantially change the way in which Willacy County Navigation District Commissioners are elected. Senate Bill 2569 has now passed both chambers of the state legislature and awaits the governor's signature to become law. Actually, whether Governor Perry signs the bill or not, SB2569 will become law on June 20, 2009, this Saturday.
Please consider the changes called for in the new legislation:
1.All five board positions, four by precinct and one at large, will be elected, at one time, during the November 2010 election.
2. The at large position for the entire district, will be the automatic chairman of the board.
3. Terry 'White, from Port Mansfield, will lose the last three years of his term (through Nov. 2013) and Don Donaho will lose the last year of his term (through Nov. 2011). There will be no continuity between present, experienced commissioners and newly elected commissioners.
If any readers are concerned about these changes, they may want to request that Governor Perry veto SB2569. The governor's contact information is listed below. 1-800-252-9600 Opinion hotline 1-512-463-1849
