Congressman Ortiz explains reasons for his vote against Energy Bill
"In the midst of an economic down turn, I cannot support legislation that imposes undue financial burdens on hardworking South Texas families and businesses," Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz said. "While I strongly believe we must continue to develop a comprehensive and sustainable energy policy, we simply cannot afford to drive up the cost of energy. This is why, after a great deal of consideration, and an overwhelming constituent outcry, I decided to vote against the American Clean Energy and Security Act, H.R. 2454."
"It was a very difficult decision for me, as it is a complicated bill that implements new and untested procedures - such as the Emissions Allowance Program and Allowance Trading, more commonly known as 'cap-andtrade' policy - at a time when American families and our local energy industry can hardly afford to pay for them," he said.
"While I appreciated the degree of open debate and bipartisan dialogue on this bill, much more work is needed in order to improve our national energy policy and achieve long-term economic stability," Ortiz said. "Congress must continue to examine climate change policy and the development of efficient renewable energy sources and implement these changes in a way that will ensure the least impact to employment and the tax burden of our citizens."
"You can be certain that I will continue to work diligently to craft sensible and effective energy legislation that addresses the needs of our nation while keeping costs manageable for families struggling to make ends meet," he said.
