Grand Jury indicts 23 people on felony Charge
The Willacy County Grand Jury returned felony indictm-ents against 23 defendants Tuesday afternoon, ranging from burglary to indecency with a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
A local woman who allegedly stole almost $20,000 from an elderly Raymondville couple has been indicted by the grand jury for theft, and for fraudulent use of identifying information.
Rosa Maria Silva, 53, was arrested in February, 2008 and charged with theft over $1,500 and under $20,000 from the couple who reportedly loved her like a daughter.
Silva was being paid to provide home health care to Jose and Maria Torres, who live in the 200 block of E. Durham Ave. She was arraigned by municipal Judge Hector "Tiger" Huerta who set her bond at $10,000 on each of the two charges. However, she was released on her personal recognizance meaning she did not have to post a cash bond.
Raymondville Police Detective David Robles said that Rosa Silva worked for the Torres for several years and gained their trust.
"Silva was supposed to deposit their social security checks each month," Robles said. "She was supposed to pay their mortgage and their utility bills."
The Torres defaulted on their USDA loan, and were cut off by one of the utility companies.
"Silva stopped working for the home health agency but showed up when the couple received their Social Security checks," Robles said.
The case was apparently not brought to the grand jury by the incumbent district attorney but District Attorney Bernard Ammerman brought the issue to them this summer. IN OTHER GRAND JURY INDICTMENTS TUESDAY:
