Concluding their nondistrict campaign with a 2-1 record, Raymondville High School's varsity football team opens up District 32-3A competition when they visit Progreso at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.

With a bye last week, Head Coach Alex Leal and his staff hit the road to scout La Feria whom the Bearkats play on October 2.

Facing Progeso this Friday, Leal said his team needs to reignite the momentum they held at the end of their non-league season.

"We have to keep playing the way we have been and cannot afford any slacking off or let down," Leal said. "We know they (Progreso) are very explosive, can score from anywhere on the field, have a lot of speed in their backfield and through their receivers. They are very aggressive at 2- 1 right now so we will have our hands full just as we do with this entire district which is very tough."

District 32-3A's congruity consistently throws the season up for grabs.

"There is a lot of parity in our district, every team is about the same size with the exception of Hidalgo, La Feria and Zapata who are a little bit bigger," Leal said. "All the rest of us are hovering around the same enrollment so we have an equal amount of athletes so anybody can beat anyone on any Friday night."

Leal firmly believes Raymondville has a great chance of advancing into the post season as long as they take care of business on the field. The Bearkats toughened up by clashing helmets with 4A teams for five consecutive weeks.

"We played against some real tough competition (during non-district)," Leal said. "We scrimmaged two quality teams (Weslaco East and La Joya-Lincoln Juarez) and played three others (Tuloso-Midway, Kingsville and Valleyview) and the thing we have going for us is that we have been behind in games and know we can come back. Our kids learned a lot from playing tough competition."
