Finishing their non-district season with a 3-0 record, Lyford High School's varsity football team begins District 32-3A play at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at La Feria.

Head Coach Jaime Infante and his staff spent last Friday's open date doing homework.

"We scouted La Feria's offense and defense to see what they are doing this year," Infante said.

La Feria is using their usual in-your-face style of defense this season.

"Defensively they are your typical La Feria defense, they run a hard nosed 50-front," Infante said. "They have good size up front, their coaches have always done a good job of executing the 50-defense and I thought they did a great job of stopping Santa Rosa's running game last week."

The Lions also have plenty of fire power on offense.

"Offensively we were impressed with their quickness, they have two quarterbacks who are each great athletes," Infante said. "One of them is a great running threat and the other is a left hander who is up and coming. On defense we are going to have to execute and play at the top of our game."

Infante is not expecting 32- 3A to be a cake walk this season.

"I have said it many times, last year this district was the toughest it has ever been since I have been here," Infante said. "I don't think it is different this year and there is a lot of parity in this district. For one, there are several good coaches, and two it has been very competitive here the last few years; all of the programs have made some strides in improvement."

The Bulldogs stand on even ground in 32-3A, now they just have to dictate their own destiny.

"I think our chances of making the playoffs are just as good as anybody else," Infante said. "Everyone is 0-0 right now and the next seven weeks, I think, the teams that play the most consistent well executed football are going to be the ones that advance. There are several teams that could wind up representing our district in the playoffs and we are hoping we are one of them."
