Amy Nicole Guerrero and Samantha Jane Cardenas Rainwater Amy Nicole Guerrero, 21, of Sebastian and and Samantha Jane Cardenas Rainwater, 19, of Raymondville died Friday night after their gray Mazda Protege' was broadsided by a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup at the intersection of East Grimes Road and Loop 499 in Harlingen at 11:30 p.m.
Police say the young women from Willacy County were headed east on Grimes Road and that the pickup driven by Cesar Martinez, 17, a Harlingen High School football player, was headed north on Loop 499.
With him was Shelby Pratt, 18, a Harlingen High School Cheerleader.
The accident happened after a football game and the Pratt girl's father said that they had stopped to eat at What-aburger and were on the way home when the crash occurred.
His daughter told him that a car pulled in front of them and after the collision the pickup rolled end-over-end, twice.
Cesar Martinez was treated at Valley Baptist Medical Center and released early Saturday morning while Shelby was bruised and scratched, Mark Pratt said.
"I'm sad those kids died and I can imagine their parents grief,"he said."It could easily be mine."
Harlingen police believe that the car driven by the girls ran a red light before being hit by the northbound pickup, but Raymondville Police Chief Uvaldo "Valdo" Zamora said that because there were no witnesses it is almost impossible to know for sure what happened.
