COST COULD BE AS MUCH AS $5 MILLION
County applies for grant funds to remodel courthouse
      The Willacy County Courthouse was built the same year that this newspaper began publication--1920. Next year both will celebrate 90th birthdays. The Chronicle/ News moved into a newer building 15 years ago, but the county courthouse has had only cosmetic improvements over all of this time.

     SATURDAY MORNING ROLLOVER - The driver of this white Dodge Sport dooley pickup escaped injury Saturday morning when his truck missed a curve and ran off the road before flipping end over end. Without a seat belt he likely would not have survived the crash.

Suspect charged with aggravated robbery and assault at Walmart
      Police matched a victim's description with a photo from the Texas driver's license photo registry to clear an aggravated robbery and assault case at the local Walmart. Valente Garza is the suspect who police say walked into Walmart and tried to steal some batteries. When approached by a store employee at 2:25 p.m. Monday.

Kenedy County may build jail, move could affect Willacy
      Kenedy County Commissioners met recently to discuss plans to build their own county jail. If they do they won't be housing inmates in Willacy County anymore. Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said that he has heard talk about a Kenedy County jail for sometime but nothing has come of it.

Unbeaten Bulldogs still on top of 32-3A, at 7-0
      Lyford High School's varsity football team kept its record perfect (7-0 overall, 4-0 district) and continue to stand atop District 32-3A after the Bulldogs crushed Progresso 41-10 last Friday. Johnny Esparza had a huge game throwing for 466 yards, two touchdowns - to Jorge Lerma and Steve Trevino - and also rushed for two touchdowns. Sammy Ambriz ran for a pair of scores.
