Unbeaten Bulldogs still on top of 32-3A, at 7-0
Lyford High School's varsity football team kept its record perfect (7-0 overall, 4-0 district) and continue to stand atop District 32-3A after the Bulldogs crushed Progresso 41-10 last Friday.
Johnny Esparza had a huge game throwing for 466 yards, two touchdowns - to Jorge Lerma and Steve Trevino - and also rushed for two touchdowns. Sammy Ambriz ran for a pair of scores.
"I think we are coming together at the right time and I am hoping we can finish our last three games strong," Head Coach Jaime Infante said. "Our offense had another great night and Progresso only gained 119 total yards against our defense."
Even with their record untouched, Infante is focused on keeping his players' heads out of the clouds.
"Right now we are trying not to get stale, focusing our practices on basic fundamentals and keeping things simple," Head Coach Jaime Infante said. "We are also concentrating on execution."
The Bulldogs go up against Hidalgo's rushing game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
"We have to stop their run game because that is their strength," Infante said. "They are a run-first-passsecond type of team but if we can contain things like their isolation plays and pressure their quarterback into passing situations we feel we will have success on Friday night."
No matter what their position in 32-3A, Infante said the Bulldogs are not in the clear just yet.
"We haven't pulled away and no one has clinched a playoff spot yet including us," Infante said. "We do not feel that we are pulling away from this district. After this week, things will start to unfold and hopefully we can clinch a playoff spot if we win on Friday."
