MARGARET W. EVANS

Margaret W Evans, Lockhart, TX, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 22, 2009 at 84 years of age. She was born June 16, 1925 to Tillman and Avie Williams. She was raised in Willacy County, TX in the Rio Grande Valley being a proud graduate of the Lyford High School Class of 1942.

Both her parents came from large families, and she was the oldest of five sisters. Her fondest times were spent traveling around the country visiting with her sisters, her many aunts and uncles and scores of cousins.

She met her late husband, R D Evans, while attending Texas A & I College in Kingsville. After graduation, they both taught in Texas public schools for over 36 years in Sinton, Agua Dulce, Devine, Luling and Austin. She taught thousands of sixth graders through the years ending her career at Joslin & Zilker in Austin. She was a 50 year member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

A staunch progressive, she was truly optimistic as to what this country stood for.

A lifelong Primitive Baptist, she joined the church in January, 1938. Besides her family, her participation in worship and fellowship with those she loved in the church was an integral part of her life and enjoyment. She was a member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, McMahan, TX. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Detrixhe and husband, Tom of Bastrop and son, Bob Evans and wife, Sue of Martindale. Granddaughters, Bonnie McWhorter, and husband Sammy, Carrie Detrixhe, Stephanie Chesnick, and husband Bradley, Becky Ast and husband Steven. Great-grandchildren, Shelby, Bailey and Macey McWhorter and Michael Detrixhe. Sisters Docia Baldridge, Yoakum, Peggy Pfluger, Boerne, Shirley Blundell and husband, Glen, Yoakum and Melba Blowey, Houston plus numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, R D Evans, her parents and her loving granddaughter whom she missed dearly, Janna Detrixhe.

A special thanks to caregivers Alice Thomas and Yolanda Cardenas and the nursing staff at Golden Age Home for three years of loving care. Visitation will be Saturday 5-7 p.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home, Lockhart. Funeral service will be Sunday 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, McMahan with Elders Sonny Huckaby and Bill Walden officiating. Burial will follow at Jeffrey Cemetery in McMahan.
