Suspect claims hard times responsible for copper wire theft

On December 21, 2009 at approximately 2:09 a.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspect or suspects stealing wire from a fishing pier. The caller gave description of a vehicle and subjects involved. A deputy was dispatched from Raymondville and also the deputy in Port was notified and the deputies met the vehicle headed West on the roadway. In making the traffic stop it was noted the vehicle contained a male and female and a 15 year old male subject.

Upon making the stop the driver was identified as Edgar Edmundo Torres and the passenger, his common law wife, was identified as Emida Ortiz. When told of the reason for the traffic stop the driver stated that the wire was in the trunk. The suspect was given his Miranda rights and asked if he wished to talk about the case and he told the officers that times are hard and he is unemployed and needed the money. He was placed under arrest along with the female who admitted taking part in the theft. The 15 year old juvenile was released to other family members who were notified to pick him up. The wire was being used during repairs to the County pier and when weighed, it totaled 240 lbs. Both subjects were charged with theft over $50 under $500. Both parties are from Edinburg and bond was set at $2,000 on Mr. Torres and $500 on Ms. Ortiz by JP George Solis. Both parties have posted bond and have been released from custody pending court appearances. Investigating officers were Deputy Joe Salazar and Deputy J.M. Gonzales.
