Behind the Badge
Well, we’re rounding the last turn and heading into the final stretch, trying to get to the finish line. Yes, the Christmas shopping season is almost over. As of this writing only three more shopping days left until the big day. I know many of you will miss getting to the malls early, the searching for just the right present for that special person in your life, the hustle and bustle of the season to be jolly. But where are the smiles? Oh, we see an occasional 3-4 shoppers, usually standing talking with people, blocking the way where you have to go around them, but at least they are smiling. But the majority of the people seem to be just “going thru the motions,” and that’s sad.
I passed by Santa sitting in his big chair looking forlornly at the long line of children waiting their turn to go sit on his lap and tell him what they want for Christmas. Neither he nor the children looked enthused about the idea. A couple times as I passed him by he waved, but it was more of a “help me” wave, than a “Merry Christmas” wave. I watched as parents turned their children loose to run amok through stores while they looked for whatever they needed, some of them did at least look up occasionally to see if their child was anywhere close, others were seen dragging children behind them crying and sniffling and rubbing their runny noses with their sleeves. It’s certain they weren’t too jolly about the season. But then did you ever see a crowded mall or store from the viewpoint of a five year old? They don’t see what we see up above, all they get to see is someone’s back side. After an hour or two of that picture you’d be crying too.
During the weekend I did get to enjoy part of a Harlingen band playing in the mall. Surprisingly, it’s the only musical group I’ve seen all season. What ever happened to the Salvation Army band? I know I’m painting a not too pretty picture here, but if you’ve been there you know to what I’m referring. All this just for one day? Well, not really, the Christmas bills last all year round. You want to salvage the season a little? This year take what you would spend on one or two nice gifts and give that money to a charity or some family less fortunate. Take the lead from the youngster who was asked if they got all they wanted for Christmas and replied, “it wasn’t my birthday” Remember the Real reason for the Season, and I’ll guarantee you’ll be jolly!
