Gladys Porter Zoo announces births of goats and kangaroos
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Forget about a partridge in a pear tree.
The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville has announced the birth of more than a dozen animals ranging from bongos to western gray kangaroos to four Nigerian dwarf goats.
Curator Jerry Stones says most of the creatures were born in October or November.
Their arrival was not announced until this week so the animals, big and small, could be checked by veterinarians and have time to bond with their mothers.
Bongos are among the largest species of African antelopes. Stones says the newborn pair at the zoo could eventually weigh 800 pounds apiece.
A meerkat, related to the mongoose family, can grow to a height of 12 inches.
