TDA Market Recap January 4, 2010
AUSTIN - For the week ending Jan. 2, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions are not available as all the locations covered by TDA Market News were closed for the New Year’s holiday. Fed cattle prices were $2 higher per hundredweight in light holiday week trade. Higher beef prices contributed to the increase. Cotton prices ended the week slightly higher as tight global supplies, recovering demand and interest from investment funds continued to support the market. Corn and grain sorghum prices were higher amid ongoing concerns about the impact that Midwest storms have had on the corn acreage that remains to be harvested. As for futures markets, feeder cattle, fed cattle, cotton, wheat and corn ended the week higher, while lumber was lower. Scattered showers fell over much of the state during the week with as much as 1.5 inches of rain recorded in parts of the Upper Coast and East Texas. Topsoil moisture was reported as adequate to short on the Plains and in South Texas, adequate to surplus in East Texas and mostly adequate elsewhere. Winter wheat was reported in mostly fair to good condition with 89 percent of the acreage emerged and 5 percent headed. Cotton was 97 percent harvested with the remaining crop in mostly fair condition. Pastures were reported to be in mostly fair to poor condition with supplemental feed and protein needed in most areas.
