5-Candidates jump into County Judge race

WILLACY COUNTY JUDGE

At the end of the day, Monday, five individuals had filed to become the next Willacy County Judge. And both of the open County Commissioners positions (Pct. 2 and Pct. 4) have more than one candidate to choose from • Running for judge is former Pct. 3 commissioner Emilio "Jr" Vera. He is a retired auto repair shop owner. • The incumbent Pct. 4 Commissioner Aurelio "Keeter" Guerra is also running for county judge. He owns an insurance business and is the acting judge at this time. • John Gonzales is a banking consultant and financial advisor and he is making his first political move by running for county judge. • Eloy Castaneda is a retired school administrator and superintendent, also a county judge candidate. • Annette C. Hinojosa is an attorney who has decided to add her name to the list of individuals who want to be our next county judge.

WILLACY DISTRICT CLERK • Gilbert Lozano is the incumbent in this race and he is a candidate for reelection. • Gloria Puente is a paralegal/ office manager in the district attorneys office and she is challenging Lozano.

WILLACY COUNTY CLERK • Teresa "Terry" Flores is running unopposed for reelection to her job. WILLACY COUNTY TREASURER • Ruben Cavazos is running unopposed for reelection. COUNTY COMMISSIONER PCT. 2

The incumbent Pct. 2 County Commissioner Erasmo "Eddie" Chapa is not a candidate for re-election and will leave office at the end of this year. • Hoping to replace Chapa are former Pct. 2 Commissioner Noe Loya, a farmer and welding shop owner. • Also in the race is Thomas "Tommie" Rains, a real estate agent, farmer and former Raymondville ISD board member. COUNTY COMMISSIONER PCT. 4

The incumbent Pct. 4 County Commissioner Aurelio "Keeter" Guerra is not running in this race because he is a county judge candidate. • Running to fill his seat are Oscar Garcia, Jr., a self employed trucker, Hilario "Larry" Rincones, a former educator and business owner and Dora Perez, a retired school teacher. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE. PCT .1

This is a race in which there are five candidates to fill the seat of Judge Richard Solis who retired this year. • The candidates include: Jesus Rene Coy, the Raymondville animal control officer; Apolinar "Polo" Garacida who is retired; Roy Hernandez, also retired; Joel Juarez, who lists his employment as “Facilitator”; and Ysenia Rosas, now handling the Pct. 1 justice of the peace duties. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE PCT. 2 - The incumbent Judge George Estevan Solis has no opponents. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE PCT. 3

The incumbent Judge Juan Silva has filed for reelection. He is being opposed by Zack Gonzales, a retired AEP employee. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE PCT. 4

There are three candidates in this race, Juan Salinas is a bus driver; Cynthia Guajardo is a Human Resources secretary and Joel Robles lists his occupation as shift leader. JUSTICE OF THE PEACE PCT. 5

The only candidate in this race is Rodolfo "Rudy" Cantu who lists his occupation as teachers aide. He is also the incumbent J.P.

CONSTABLE PCT. 5

In this race there are two candidates. They are Leonel Cantu, a daycare assistant and Mario Salazar, a bus driver/ maintenance worker for the Lyford CISD. DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRMAN

Ernesto "Lefty" Cavazos is not opposed for reelection to lead his party.

Willacy County voters have plenty of candidates to choose from and this should be a very interesting election.
