Making yourself and your vote count
By Larry G. Spence

Every ten years the United States takes on a huge undertaking in trying to get an accurate count of the number of people living in our Country. You will be hearing a lot about the census in the next few months and we encourage you to make sure you are among those who are counted. Some see the census as invasion of privacy, however it is essential that each state gets an accurate count as possible so the amount of monies from grants and other awards that are available to each state can be awarded and put to use where it is needed the most. An inaccurate count could cause the state to receive less money than we should have coming to us. So fill out your forms and get them in. If someone from the census bureau goes by to talk with you, be truthful with the information given in answers to their questions.

Another way you can express your opinion or make sure you count is to vote in the upcoming primary. As you drive around you will see many signs from many candidates for various offices. It is your duty as a citizen to get to know those who are asking for your vote. Seek them out, see what their positions are, what they plan to do if elected, why they are running for office. Find out if they are in office how they have done, if they held office previously or maybe another position of responsibility, how they performed their duties at that position.

What is the reputation of the individuals who seeks your vote? Do they have a family? What are their goals for the position they are seeking, and for Willacy County? Most will be more than willing to talk with you, you just need to seek them out. Make sure they are running for office to better the County and not to better thhemselves. Don’t vote friendship or vote blindly, vote for qualified people, individuals who you believe will do the best job for the betterment of Willacy County and it’s citizens.

So in closing make sure you are counted, and make sure your vote will count, all for the betterment of Willacy County. You can’t complain if you aren’t counted and you don’t go vote. Seek out the best qualified candidate and vote. It’s your way of making sure your opinion counts.
