LIVINGSTON, Texas (AP) - Five Texas prison inmates tried to escape after a church service, prompting gunfire from correctional officers, who wounded three of the prisoners.

All five were taken into custody within the prison perimeter after the incident at the Polunsky Unit in Livingston on Friday night, prison system spokesman Jason Clark said. The three who were shot remained hospitalized Saturday with nonlifethreatening injuries, and all of them suffered lacerations from razor wire atop an interior fence.

The five face felony attempted escape charges.

The inmates were returning to their housing area from the unit gym where they had attended a church service when they attempted to scale the fence.
