Austin considering light rail, streetcar line

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin is considering building a rail bridge over Lady Bird Lake as one option for extending a proposed light rail or streetcar line.

Transportation Director Robert Spillar said Tuesday that the bridge could be built farther east or west. The city and its consulting engineers are settling on a preferred route and are scheduled to unveil it Feb. 25 to the Austin City Council.

Spillar says the upcoming map will not specify a route across Lady Bird Lake, instead leaving as possibilities existing bridges at Congress Avenue or South First Street or a new bridge.

Spillar says that question is likely to remain unanswered until after voters decide on the proposed urban rail. That could come in November in the form of a bond referendum.
