Charlie Marshall
ARANSAS PASS - Charlie Marshall was first elected to the Aransas Pass Independent School District board of trustees in 1959. That was 51 years ago and Marshall has served with distinction all this time.
The 1941 Raymondville High School graduate has served with 11 different superintendents over the years and he is a candidate for reelection to the school board in the May 8, 2010 election.
Charlie is a former school board president and the Charlie Marshall Elementary School was named in his honor by the residents of Aransas Pass.
Mr. Marshall was born in near Skidmore on July 7, 1923 and he attended public schools in Raymondville, where he graduated from high school.
He went on to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Marshall moved to Aransas Pass after the war and went to work in 1949 at the Cage Funeral Home. In 1953 the name of the business changed to Cage-Marshall Funeral Home.
The Charlie Marshall Funeral Home and Crematory was dedicated in Aransas Pass in 1988.
Marshall was appointed to the Texas State Board of Morticians by governors Price Daniel, John Connally, Preston Smith and Doiph Briscoe.
As a school board member Marshall encourages students, parents and teachers to work together to support academic excellence in the community and to instill pride in their schools.
"My interest in education is the health, education and welfare of children, that's the only thing," he told the Aransas Pass Progress newspaper.
In 2004 Marshall was honored by a tribute in the U.S. Congressional Record by Congressman Ruben Hinojosa.
Mr. Marshall is one of many former Bearkats who have achieved significant honors and success in their lives. The Chronicle/News is always happy to publish such records of accomplishment by current and former county residents.
