VICTORIA, Texas (AP) - Life in prison is the punishment for a San Antonio man convicted of killing an elderly neighbor by shooting her in the head with an arrow.
A jury in Victoria on Wednesday rejected the death penalty for 20- year-old Joe Estrada Jr. and decided he must serve life behind bars without the possibility of parole.
Jurors on Feb. 18 convicted Estrada of capital murder in the 2008 killing of 76-year-old Viola Barrios in what prosecutors say was a burglary. The victim was the matriarch of the Los Barrios Mexican restaurant, which she opened in 1979.
The trial was moved to Victoria because of intense media coverage in the San Antonio area.
