Cities, County, Schools & Irrigation District sue local business woman for $28,974.19 in delinquent real estate taxes
A local business woman who is suing the former county judge, the police chief and the City of Raymondville for criminal malicious prosecu-tion, the intentional infliction of emotional distress and false imprisonment is herself being sued by many of the same bodies on an unrelated matter of delinquent taxes, the Chronicle/News has learned.
Real estate investor Gloria Reyes-Garcia is the sole defendant in a lawsuit numbered 2010-CV-0124-A filed on March 26 in 197th State District Court.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of plaintiffs Willacy County, City of Raymondville, Raymondville Independent School District, Lasara Independent School District, Lyford Consolidated Independent School District and the Delta Lake Irrigation District.
The lawsuit was filed against Reyes-Garcia by Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, the delinquent tax attorneys for all of the local taxing bodies.
In the lawsuit allegations are that Reyes-Garcia owes back taxes for the years from 2003 through 2008 in the total amount of $28,974.19, including taxes, penalties and interest.
Reyes-Garcia's address listed in the lawsuit is 5166 Skyline Drive, Beeville, TX 78102-8401.
Mrs. Garcia is a former Raymondville ISD school board president and ran for county judge several years ago.
She has been active in local politics and supported various political candidates. Most recently, Mrs. Garcia was active in the campaign of Tara Rios Ybarra who was defeated in her bid to win her reelection as State Representative earlier this month.
Former county judge Eliseo "Cheyo" Barnhart was accused of sexually molesting Andrea Sias-Expinosa in his office in January, 2006. She is a niece of Mrs. Garcia and although she filed a complaint with city police, Barnhart was never charged with any crime involving her statement. In fact, after the Texas Rangers werce called into the investigation, it was Espinosa and her aunt, Gloria Reyes- Garcia who were indicted by a grand jury for bribery, extortion, theft and conspiracy to commit those acts. On October 13,2006 Espinosa, her husband, Rene Espinosa and her aunt, Gloria Reyes-Garcia were arrested.
On June 1, 2007 then District Attorney Juan Guerra dismissed all the indictments filed against Espinosa, her husband, Gloria Reyes Garcia, and her husband, Richard Garcia.
Three of the four defendants were re-indicted on September 13, 2007. Richard Garcia was not re-indicted. A motion to quash the second round of indictments was signed by Judge Manuel Banales of Corpus Christi, effectively ending the matter.
Judge Barnhart was subsequently tried by a jury in Kingsville and convicted on two counts of perjury resulting from conflicting statements he gave to city police and Texas Rangers in connection with allegations made by Mrs. Espinosa.
