Appliance stores hit jackpot with government voucher program for washers, dryers & water heaters
Those who remember Russian comedian Yakov Smirnoff from television shows during the 1980's will remember his favorite saying about the United States.
"What a country" he used to say.
What a country indeed!
The Willacy County Commissioners Court recently got a grant from the Texas Dept. of Health & Community Affairs to replace electric appliances damaged by the flooding during Hurricane Dolly, two years ago.
Locally the grant funds were divided by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council before distribution to county leaders in Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties.
Willacy County's share of the proceeds came to $242,319.50, much of which has been spent to replace the appliances of those who asked for the money and who met certain criteria.
Becky Chapa, of the county judge's office said that all county families were invited to replace their damaged appliances, including, refrigerators, stoves (ranges), washers, dryers, and window air conditioners.
Chapa said those asking for assistance must provide proof that they lived in the home at the time of Hurricane Dolly, July 23, 2008. A utility bill, or tax statement will be required.
Proof of family income is also required. A single person can earn up to $25,550 and be eligible while a family with six members can earn up to $42,350 and a family of 12 can earn up to $59,850 and still participate.
Chapa said $600 is the maximum that can be provided by voucher.
The voucher may be used at Ken's Furniture, Jano's or Famsa in Raymondville and cannot be spent in other Rio Grande Valley communities.
Based on the amount of money allocated to Willacy County, Chapa estimates that as many as 250 families can be served.
After the first round of applications in January, some 157 vouchers have been issued. Those interested in applying for assistance during the second round may do so on May 27 and May 28 at the County Commissioners Meeting Room, 576 W. Main Street, Raymondville. Hours 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Previous applicants are not eligible and only one appliance voucher is available per family. Applicants must have a valid form of identification, such as a driver's license, or a picture ID card.
Before the vouchers are awarded, on a first come, first serve, basis, the county inspector must visit the home to ascertain that there is a need. Adan Ramirez is the inspector.
