Grand Jury indicts parents of Lasara teen with manslaughter in her death

By Paul Whitworth

The mother and father of a 16-year-old Lasara student who died on November 17, 2009 have been indicted by a Willacy County grand jury as the result of her death.

Amanda Coronado was a sophomore at Lasara High School and was a diabetic. She died after an insulin pump that delivered medication to her was removed.

An investigation by the Willacy County Sheriff's Dept. focused on who removed the insulin pump and why, according to Sheriff Larry Spence.

The results of the investigation, which included interviews with family members and friends was turned over to the Willacy County & District Attorneys office. District Attorney Bernard Ammerman then referred the case to the grand jury.

The investigation centered on comments the girls mother made at Sunday mass in Lasara, according to Sheriff Spence.

According to the March 25, Grand Jury Docket, Elias Coronado and his wife, Maria De Jesus Coronado, have been indicted on a charge of manslaughter, in the case of their daughter.

Elias Coronado, 44, and Maria de Jesus Coronado, 38, were arrested by sheriff's deputies on December 22 and are free on bond set by Justice of the Peace Juan Silva.

Some Lasara residents say that Maria Coronado believed that if the pump was removed, her daughter would be healed by God.

Sheriff Spence commented on the rumor at the time.

"This is a sad situation. Sometimes God does heal but the best thing to do is go to the doctor and let him check it out, not take things into our own hands. Because of these actions this young girl is not here anymore."

Manslaughter is a second degree felony punishable by probation up to 20 years in prison, according to District Attorney Ammerman
