Texas man sentenced for killing man on sidewalk
SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A Texas man will spend up to 10 years in prison for driving onto a sidewalk in central Illinois last year and killing a local man.
Twenty-year-old Thomas Self was sentenced this week in Shelby County Circuit Court to 13 years. A plea deal guarantees he will serve no more than 10 after pleading guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound and failure to report an accident involving a death.
Police say Self drove onto a sidewalk and into a group of people in front of The Last Stand tavern in Sigel on Sept. 27, 2009. Sigel is in Shelby County about 65 miles southwest of Champaign.
The vehicle killed 41-year-old Brett Schutte of Sigel. Two other people were injured.
