2010 Lyford Elementary Career Days

Lyford Elementary School held its 5th Annual Career Days on May 11 and 12, 2010. It was held at school with all students in grades 2-5 participating in the day-long activities. School Counselors Rosie Salazar and Chris Luna coordinated the event.

On Tuesday, May 11, second and third graders attended six 30-minute sessions as they rotated classrooms to listen to various guest speakers. Career Day guests on that day were: Marissa Latigo, Educational Assistant from the Valley Nature Center in Weslaco; Lyford Police Chief Paul Campbell; Lucy Ybarra, LVN, Su Clinica Familiar; Roy Medrano, USDA Honey Bee Research; Neil Patel, La Quinta Hotel Manager, Warden R. Benavidez and Team from the Willacy Detention Center, and Efrain Barron, Lyford Elementary School Teacher.

On Wednesday, May 12, fourth and fifth graders attended twelve 20- minute sessions as they rotated classrooms. Career Day guests on that day were: Oscar Caballero, Hygeia Branch Manger; Juan Pena and Ben Garcia, USDA District Conservationists; Adam Cheney and Lauren Laughlin from U.S. Coast Guard-South Padre Island; Emily Reyes, South Texas Emergency Foundation; Marivel Flores, LVN, Su Clinica Familiar; Jeffrey Whitfield, U.S. Customs and Border Protection; Manager Joe Longoria and Marcos Hernandez, Raymondville Whataburger; Edward A. Sandoval, Attorney (Lyford High School graduate); Bill Roach, Licensed Professional Counselor; and Efrain Barron, Lyford Elementary School Teacher.

At the end of both days, each Career Day Guest also spoke to the entire student body through K-PUP, the school’s televised News Station. They talked to students about their careers and encouraged them to do well in school, begin setting long-term goals, and to reach for the stars.
