Local gangs take fight to Lyford cemetery
An argument that began on Facebook turned into a physical confrontation at the Lyford Guadalupe Cemetery early Sunday morning, leaving a 21- year-old man in critical condition at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
Lyford Police Chief Paul Campbell said that 32 men from Raymondville engaged in the fight and that one was stabbed four times in the back during the melee.
Chief Campbell said that the trouble began over a Facebook insult. The man who was stabbed "claims that his gang’s colors were disgraced by another gang member," said Campbell.
“Well, he didn't like that so he called the man the up and they began to argue and after a brief conversation on the phone and they decided to meet here (Lyford) and have a brawl.”
Campbell said this is the first gang violence he has seen after taking over as police chief in December. He said there were 13 on one side and 19 on the other and that both gangs came from Raymondville.
Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said that the victim has declined to testify against his assailant but the District Attorney is pressing for arrests and indictments to be made in the incident.
