RISC flunks TEA Accountability Ratings, Board president blames high dropout rate

The Texas Education Agency last week issued its 2010 Accountability Ratings and it has bad news for local students and parents in the Raymondville ISD.

Last year Raymondville High School was rated Academically Acceptable, Myra Green Middle School was rated Unacceptable, while Pittman Elementary was rated as Exemplary and L.C. Smith Elementary was rated as Acceptable.

And the RISD as a district was rated as Academically Acceptable.

In the 2010 report issued on July 30 the ratings were worse. Raymondville High School was rated Academically Unacceptable and so was Myra Green Middle School. Pittman Elementary, however, continued to be rated Exemplary and L.C. Smith Elementary improved to Recognized.

With two of the district's four school flunking the TEA standards, the district has now been rated as Academically Unacceptable.

RISD board chairman Sam Loya blamed the district's low graduation numbers as the reason why the district was down graded. According to TEA records the Raymondville Class of 2009 had a graduation rate of 68.3 % and a dropout rate of 25.7%.

Meanwhile San Perlita ISD had a graduation rate of 94.1% and no dropouts.

Lyford CISD had a graduation rate of 82.5% and a dropout rate of 6.2%.

Concerning academic standards Lyford High School was rated as Recognized, Lyford Middle School was Recognized and Lyford Elementary was rated Exemplary.

Lasara High School was Recognized, and Lasara Elementary was rated Exemplary.

San Perlita High School was rated Exemplary and San Perlita Middle School was Recognized, as was San Perlita Elementary.

Statewide, 239 districts were rated Exemplary, 597 districts were Recognized, 298 districts were Academically Acceptable, 45 were rated Academically Unacceptable and 10 districts were not rated.

Statewide individual schools showed 2,624 rated Exemplary, 3,153 were rated Recognized, 1,456 were Academically Acceptable, 125 were rated Academically Unacceptable and 647 districts were not rated for various reasons.

Raymondville ISD and Edcouch-Elsa ISD were the only two districts in the Rio Grande Valley rated as Unacceptable.
