Voters will have choices in Navigation District Election

Critics of the Willacy County Navigation District have often complained that elections are not publicized and that board seats are handed down to individuals chosen by the other board members.

Until now there has been a three man board but that number will increase to five this year with the election on Nov. 2. The election has been properly advertised and at the candidate filing deadline Tuesday, 13 individuals have filed for five seats.

In Pct. 1 the candidates are the incumbent Mark Brown and Cesar Garcia.

In Pct. 2 Robert Hulen and Ray Solis are the candidates.

In Place 3 there are four candidates, Daniel Reyna, Paul Laird, Walt Kittelberger and B.J. Powell.

Pct. 4 has only one candidate and he is Antonio R. Trevino.

Senate Bill 2569 which set up the rules for the election, uses the County Commis- sioner Precincts are the boundaries for filing.

The Navigation District extends from Port Mansfield West to Lasara but only in the northern part of the county.

Lyford, Sebastian and Santa Monica are not included in the district.

Senator Lucio's Bill provided that the Fifth position on the board be an at-large position and that the winner of that race would serve as the chair person of the Navigation Dist. Board. Four individuals have filed in that race. They are Tommy Rains, Jr., Virginia Garza Shuey, Steve "Bonzai" Banyai and Raul P. Flores.

The Navigation District board election will be held in the same polling places at the general election on the same day using seperate voting machines and rooms, at an estimated additional cost of $5,000.
