When local governing bodies vote to raise taxes above a percentage rate set by the state they automatically trigger a procedure that allows a Rollback election where voters can approve, or disapprove the higher rates.

Lyford Consolidates Independent School District trustees have approved an ad valorem tax rate of $1.33 per hundred dollars valuation, a rate that is 13ยข, higher than the school district rollback tax rate.

Lyford voters will have the opportunity to decide if they support the higher rates, or they can slap them down in a special election on September 21, 2010.

The tax question will be the only issue on the ballot, according to county elections administrator Jaime Serna. Early voting begins Sept. 7, in Precincts 3,6,7, 9,11, and 12.
