Asencion Martinez,
He was born on December 8, 1925 in Combes, TX, son of Eluterio and Josefa (Garza) Martinez.
Our father was well known to everyone as “Chon” and remained a friend to all around the town of Lyford.
Chon never received a driver’s license, however, he was a hard working man who worked many jobs such as driving a tractor, plumbing and carpentry. He was not a materialistic man but he gave his family the most important things in life, such as a home, values, principles and the most priceless of all - his love.
In 1994, he suffered a heart attack that left half his body paralyzed. That same year he accepted Christ as his Savior. Soon after, he began driving his scooter all over Lyford picking up aluminum cans for a living. For the next 16 years, the community saw him on his scooter and his little American flag driving by their homes, therefore, on the days he didn’t go by, people would call one of his daughters or drive by his home to check on his well being.
On August 4, he suffered a heat stroke; that was the last day he picked up a can in our town. A month later, to the day, he was once again surrounded by all his family as he went to meet God, his Savior. He left this world happy and content knowing his family was beside him - for they were the reason for his living.
He is survived by two sons: Asencion Martinez, Jr. of Lyford, and Miguel (Maria Luisa) Martinez of Rio Hondo; five daughters, Petra M. Coronado, Dominga (Jose Luis) Cabrera, Antonia M. Cortinas, Laurie M. Lopez, all of Lyford and Lanchie (Ernesto) Guzman of Raymondville; one brother, Lupe Martinez and one sister, Eustolia Mendoza; 23 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five greatgreat grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Rutila M. Martinez, son, Jose Ramon Martinez, his parents, three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 6, 2010, at Lyford Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford with interment following in the Lyford Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home in Raymondville.
The family would like to thank everyone who offered kind words and prayers. Thank you to all who provided food and misc. items throughout the past days. Special thanks to Dr. Kristensen, Dr. Smith and Dr. Robinson, Nurses That Care, Raymondville EMS, Valley Baptist, ER Staff and Duddlesten Funeral HOme for the extra care and services provided to our father and family.
