Reader agrees county made poor deal on land purchase

Dear Editor,

I agree with how foolish it was to purchase the land that Judge John Gonzalez and the commissioners bought. I don’t understand how these county officials excluding Mr. Noe Loya could have agreed on the ridiculous price for that piece of land. I also would like to know from the remaining commissioners, “What were you thinking?” I know some people are book smart others are street smart, but where does that leave you? This says a lot about each and every one of you including the judge.

I also want to know how you can let Mr. Eliberto Guerra, county commissioner from Pct. 1 and 5 be in charge of something so important and that is involving so much money. This man knows very little about negotiating a good price, getting land appraised. You ask him a question and he doesn’t know the answer, or his excuse is he doesn’t remember. He doesn’t have the slightest ideal about top soil contents or water table levels. You gave him a task that is too difficult for him. He was voted in because the people wanted a change but instead we got stuck in the same boat again. I’m sorry to say he had his chance and nothing was changed. We all need to make our vote count and try to get people in office who will do their best for Willacy County.

The only ones that are going to benefit from this deal will be Mr. and Mrs. Parker. The appraisal district has the land appraised for $7,500.00 an acre. Were the Parkers paying that much on the taxes? I think not.

I praise you for having the courage to speak your mind if we had more people like you maybe things would not be the way they are. For you, Mr. Loya, I also praise you for voting against this deal. It’s like a saying I often hear, “Stand up for what is right even if you are standing alone.” We know you tried and that is what counts. When these foolish men start seeing what a really bad mistake they made they can only point the finger to themselves but it will be too late, the damage will have been done.

Thanks for your letter, Mr. Warner. The land the county bought is in Pct. 2 and Noe Loya is the commissioner in that precinct. The commissioners should have taken his advice.
