Coronado committed to mental institution
The Lasara mother of a 16- year-old daughter who took her off a life support pump, causing her death, has been confined to a mental institution for one year.
Maria de Jesus Coronado went before 197th state District Judge Migdalia Lopez on Tuesday and was committed to a year at the Tropical Texas Behavior Health starting from the day of the order.
Lopez’s ruling was based on evidence presented by two psychiatrists that Coronado meets the criteria for extended courtordered mental health services.
“The court finds by clear and convincing evidence ... the patient has a severe mental illness or mental retardation, and as a result of that mental illness or mental retardation is likely to cause serious bodily injury to another if the patient is not provided with treatment and supervision,’’ reads the court’s verdict.
Coronado was engaged in dangerous conduct that caused the death of her daughter by removing her insulin pump.
However, the court found she was pregnant and delivered a child last July. She was acquitted by reason of insanity on March 29 and the court ordered her to be committed to the Vernon Campus of North Texas State Hospital for 30 days.
Coronado was released from the Cameron County Jail on Tuesday and has seven days to turn herself in. tony@raymondvillechroniclenews.com
