Lyford Basketball report
The Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team, on Monday, were in a three-way tie for second place in District 31-3A (with Raymondville and Orange Grove) after going 1-1 last week. Lyford High School defeated Orange Grove 53-49 on Tuesday, January 17.
Reaching double digits in the scoring department for the Lady Bulldogs were Maggie Vasquez (20 points) and Gaby Rivera (12). Also scoring were Rebekah Perez (eight), Zelina DeLeon (seven), Yesenia Ortega (two), Sara Bennack (two) and Miranda Ramirez (two).
Lyford, however, was defeated by Raymondville 51-26 this past Friday. Scoring for the Lady Bull- dogs were Maggie Vasquez (15 points), Zelina DeLeon (eight) and Gaby Rivera (three). Lyford' s varsity, junior varsity and freshmen girls basketball teams host Corpus Christi Miller at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday. All three teams host Robstown at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Current per game season averages: Maggie Vasquez - 17.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 2.5 assists. Gaby Rivera - 12 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 steals and 3.8 assists. Zelina DeLeon - 5.4 points, 2.2 rebounds and 6 of 14 in three point shot attempts. Rebekah Perez - 3.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. BULLDOGS
Lyford High School 's varsity boys basketball team (14-12 overall, 2-1 in District 31-3A) beat Raymondville 54-49 on Friday. The Bulldogs scored 17 points in the first quarter, 17 in the second, 12 in the third and eight in the fourth.
Mathew Vasquez amassed 13 points, 23 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists. Johnathan Nino collected nine points, seven rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist. Lucas Salinas scored nine points and brought down 11 rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist. Gilberto Rodriguez accumulated eight points, four assists, one rebound, a block and a steal. Raymond Cavazos contributed eight points, four rebounds, two steals and two assists. Christiaan Trevino had four points, five rebounds, three steals, a block and a steal. Raul Herrera scored three points, a rebound and an assist.
